OMS STUDENTS PERFORM IN THE MARYLAND MILLER SENATE BUILDING

for the NIGHT IN ANNAPOLIS event for the 47th Legislative District, with Senator David Harrington.  About 60 persons, students and 2 teachers and parents were transported to Annapolis by C.E.S. Tours, with service donated to the school by its owner for this important community appearance. 

Piano solos were presented by Maria Kisker, Victor Baules and Olivia Martin, and a piano duet was presented by Bhaylynn and William Tiwari

Violin solos and duet were presented by Maya Brown and Victor Baules;

Cellist ensemble with Denna Purdie (teacher), Myschelle Spears, and Donna-Lee Bellamy; and

Singers:  Ava Peterson, Keena Chew, Queen Griffin, Joshua Welch, Anne Marghie Santos, Merissa Collins, Jenine Faith Lycorish, Chantel Williamson, Kianna Marie Kelly-Futch, Alysia Mitchell, Brent Leach, Brittany Sheryll, Sahari Abney, and Justin Sanders.

The students were greeted by and were given photo ops by the various delegates of District 47 as well as the senator.  Some had the privilege of having their photo taken with the Lt. Governor General of Maryland, Anthony G. Brown, among other politicians.

The two highlight of the evening where the opening recorder solo "Amazing Grace" performed by 7-year-old Aaren Hope Harewood, who had the 200+ audience listening in silence, and  the closing vocal solo "Tomorrow" from ANNIE sung by 7-year-old Kianna Kelly-Futch, whose moving rendition resulted in the senator running down the center aisle to her at the conclusion, dropping to one knee, and embracing the tiny girl with a wonderul smile and words of praise.  Then noticing the dozens of cameras that appeared, her turned her to take advantage of the photo op.

OMS STUDENTS PERFORM DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AT THE HYATTSVILLE MUNICPAL BUILDING

Ottley Music School was invited and accepted the invitation to perform at the Municipal Building of the City of Hyattsville, Maryland for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday celebration, on Thursday, January 15 at 7:00 pm.  The performers included soprano Anne Marghie Santos (13), violinist Victor Baules (13), pianist Olivia Martin (11), soprano Kianna Kelly-Futch (7), alto Alysia Dominique Mitchell (7), and adult soprano, Keena Renee Chew, singing spirituals, art songs, and broadway, appropriate to the mission.  In attendance were the Buffalo Baptist Church Gospel choir and its minister, several citizens of Hyattsville, a council man and his family, as well as Mayor Bill Gardiner and the parents and friends of the performers. They are pictured to the right with the Mayor of the City of Hyattsville, Maryland.

OTTLEY MUSIC SCHOOL PERFORMS IN THE COMMUNITY

Ottley Music School performed besides three recitals on December 20th, one of January 27, one on February 26, and will perform on March 31st,  they appeared in several concerts in the community:

  • Nov. 16 "Messiah Solos" with strings and continuo at Metropolitan Seventh-day Adventist Church, Hyattsville (DVD released)
  • Nov. 22 "Messiah Solos" with piano at Hillhaven Assisted Living, Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Adelphi
  • Nov. 22 Vocal and Violin music concert at OMS for the Washington Area Caribbean Chamber of Commerce Road Show.
  • Dec. 6  Seasonal and Broadway music at the Caribbean Creative Circle Christmas Celebration at the Publick Playhouse, Landover
  • Dec. 13 Seasons, Violin, Piano music at the Prince George's Plaza Christmas Concerts, Hyattsville, MD.
  • Dec. 6  Ms.Ottley directed a 50-voice Anniversary choir plus trumpet teacher, Kieron Irvin and drum teacher, Joe Viviano were part of the 35th Anniversary celebrations of Metropolitan Seventh-day Adventist Church
  • Dec. 13 Ms. Ottley directed the Anniversary Choir, with the Metropolitan Symphony Steel Orchestra II (children, youth, and adults) taught by steel drum teachers Carol Wilson Joseph and former teacher, Geraldine Caesar.
  • January 11, two OMS students appeared in the "George Shirley and Friends" Concert at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.
  • January 15, OMS performs for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration at the City of Hyattsville Municipal Building at 7:00 pm.
  • January 18, Master Sargeant Cleveland Chandler (OMS Violin Teacher) performs with U. S. Air Force Band in the "We Are One" concert. for President Obama at the Lincoln Memorial.
  • January 20, Kieron Irvine, OMS trumpet teacher, performed with Howard University Jazz Band for Inauguration Parade.
  • February 14, 21 Students performed in several SDA Churches.
  • February 21, OMS Faculty, Students, with special guests, The Amistad Quartet performed "Music of Asian and Black Composers" at the Southern Asian Seventh-day Adventist Church, Silver Spring, MD
  • March 16, OMS Students (vocal, piano, violin, celli) performed at the Maryland Miller Senate House for Senator David Harrington's 47th Legislative District "Night in Annapolis" for about 200 of the district's people. 
  • March 29, OMS Students (vocal, piano, violin) perform at the Jefferson Senior Community in Arlington, VA
  • March 29, OMS Students perform at a Nursing Home in Arlington, VA.

Other faculty and students served in various ways this season.  Actually faculty train students to serve their community all the time, and then find or make opportunity for them to perform.  Keep browsing our site of what we do.


OMS SECOND DVD, Handel's "MESSIAH" solos is now available.

STUDENTS AND FACULTY OF OMS PERFORM HANDEL'S "MESSIAH" SOLOS

on Saturday, November 16, 2008 at Metropolitan Seventh-day Adventist Church.  A DVD was produced of this wonderful production, and is available at the Ottley Music School Bookstore.

We released our first DVD of performances from the concert, "Scenes from ELIJAH & MESSIAH".  This concert was recorded on December 2nd, 2007 and featured current and former students as well as invited musical guests.  To order a copy, please call us at 301-454-0991 weekdays.

Former Ottley Music School Student is Crowned Miss Oakwood University

Huntsville, Alabama, Monday, January 21, 2008. At about 10:00 pm, Danielle LaTouche of Germantown, Maryland, daughter of Mr. Olson LaTouche and the late Helena Ottley LaTouche, was crowned Miss Oakwood University. Danielle attended Ottley Music School while a high school student back in 2002-2004, studying both voice and piano with Mrs. Ottley. She scored high on the National Guild Auditions, and learned very advanced vocal music. More info to come when available.

Former Ottley Music School Students release CDs

Hyattsville, Maryland, Saturday, March 22, 2008. Jasmine Murrell Brann, soprano released her first CD. Jasmine was a student of Mrs. Ottley while a senior at Eleanor Roosevelt High School. She went on to attend and graduate from Oakwood University in education and Spanish, and now heads the Foreign Language Department of High Point High School in Beltsville, Maryland. She is also a Praise Team leader of Metropolitan Seventh-day Adventist Church and a member of the world-traveled MetroSingers. She released her second CD on Saturday, March 28 at the same church for a capacity audience.  For more about Jasmine and the CDs, visit her site here.

Beltsville, Maryland. 2006 Clayton Eugene Taylor, Jr. pianist and composer, released his first CD. Clayton was a student of Mrs. Ottley from the ages of almost 13-19, and by the time he was 16, after just 18 months of study, performed the Grieg's "Piano Concerto" Movement I with the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra, and for the National Guild Audition with a second piano. He also performed the Bach Concerto for 4 harpsichords with his classmates with the Ottley Music School String Ensemble. He now serves as a church musician in the Washington area. Hyattsville, Maryland, 2005 Anika-Tene McKinney was an expert with a masters in Theatre Arts when she came to Ottley Music School to prepare to enter the masters program in Music Education at Howard University. She studied piano, voice, and music theory with Mrs. Ottley, qualifying her to enter Howard University. In 2005 she released her first CD, then the second soon after. STUDENTS PERFORM IN THE POCONOS, May 3, 2008

Cleavon Davis, Kianna Kelly-Futch, Destiny Ruth Sterling, Alysia Dominique Mitchell, and alumnus, Jasmine Murrell Brann presented a sacred concert of music of BlackComposers. Their audience was the Northeastern Conference, New England District members of the Personal Ministries Depart of the church.


STUDENTS and ALUMNI OF OMS PERFORM CANCER SOCIETY CELEBRATION on JUNE 8th

On Sunday, 6-8-2008, String Students under the direction of Professor Denna Purdie performed the prelude and processional of the event. Nine-year-old Destiny-Ruth Sterling also performed violin solo, and bassoonist Edgar Adjahoe and cellist Denna Purdie performed a duet. Music during the service were presented by coloratura alumni Nichelle Anderson (who has been asked to come every year since 2005), and pianist Nicole Anderson, B.Mus. who had just graduated Magna cum laude as a composition music major from Oakwood University. She arranged the solo that her sister Nichelle sang (Great is Thy Faithfulness) and her own selection called Redeemed. Destiny ended the program with a vocal solo of Hall Johnson, "My Good Lord Done Been Here, Blessed My Soul..." The String Ensemble played a Bach Festival for the Recessional, and were well received.
