String Quartet
The OMS String Quartet began in 2004 with members being students Autumn
King, Kevin Powell, violins, and Lelia Michelle Walker, viola, and
April Roach, cello, teachers. In 2006 the viola position was covered by
teacher Amanda Walker.
In 2006-2007 the quartet was comprised of Janette Davis and Ryal
Glapion, violin teachers, Catherine Bennett, student violist, and Denna
Purdie, cello (and violin) teacher. In the summer of 2007 the quartet
was comprised of Janette Davis and Ryal Glapion, violins, Anton Martinez, viola
(piano teacher), and Denna Purdie, cello.
On the Caribbean tour, Ryal Glapion's position was substituted by
violinist Verleyne Andrews of Trinidad, a private lesson teacher, and a student
at Andrews University in Michigan. Besides the regular quartet music,
the ensemble of each year distinguished itself by performing the music
of Black Composer Chevalier de Saint Georges (1745-1799) of the French
Caribbean island of Guadaloupe.
